TURKEY

Our opinion:

Turkey (officially Türkiye Cumhuriyeti, in short TC, German Republic Turkey) is a unitary state in the Near East Anatolia and southeastern European eastern Thrace. The country has been secular and Kemalist since its founding in 1923 as a successor state to the Ottoman Empire. The state founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk initiated a modernization of Turkey through social and legal reforms modeled on various European nation states.

Geographically, the country is usually divided into seven regions. In Turkey live 82,003,882 inhabitants (as of 2018) on an area of 783 562 km ². Nearly a fifth of its population lives in the agglomeration of Istanbul, and there are also other megacity cities such as the capital Ankara, Izmir, Bursa, Adana, Antalya, Konya and others. The degree of urbanization in 2017 was 74.4%. [7] There are 18 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and numerous nature reserves in Turkey.

Turkey is a middle-income emerging market. In 2016, the country generated the world’s thirteenth-largest economic output adjusted for purchasing power. Turkey is a member of the OECD, NATO, the United Nations, the G20 and the Organization for Islamic Cooperation. In addition, since 1999 Turkey has officially been an EU candidate country.

Following a coup attempt in July 2016, the Turkish government and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan declared a state of emergency and adopted measures that changed Turkey beyond the two-year duration of the state of emergency.
